Bottled water continued to record strong performance in 2012 as more consumers value the convenience, cleanliness and safety that bottled water has over tap water. Tap water throughout Vietnam is not potable, and it has to be boiled before drinking. In most places, households even have to filter the water, either before or after boiling, to eliminate some of the toxic substances. As such, purchasing bottled water is much more convenient than the long process of filtering and boiling tap water before consumption. Besides, bottled water's good performance can also be attributed to the fact that it is still believed to be one of the healthiest choices amongst all soft drinks.

Competitive Landscape

PepsiCo Vietnam led the category with nearly 30% off-trade value share, followed closely by La Vie Joint Venture Co with 26%. Both companies are also leaders in still bottled water, the most consumed product in bottled water in 2012. Whilst having different products - PepsiCo Vietnam with its purified water brand Aquafina and La Vie Joint Venture Co with its natural mineral water brand La Vie - both companies maintained high shares over the years thanks to continuously strong marketing efforts. Advertisements for both brands can be seen constantly in various mass media channels.

Industry Prospects

Bottled water is expected to grow with constant off-trade value CAGR of 9% over the forecast period. Growth will be accelerated thanks to rising awareness of health and wellness and concern for food safety. Bottled water is perceived as one of the healthiest soft drink choices, and thus will benefit from higher education level and health trends. Besides, rising concern for food safety will also be good for bottled water's performance, as some people perceive bottled water to be safer and more hygienic than unpackaged water, such as boiled tap water. For those reasons, bottled water's expected off-trade volume CAGR during the forecast period, at 17%, is stronger than that of the review period of 14%.
