Tobacco was affected by a downward tendency in terms of consumed packaging in 2012. Rising health awareness, the smoking ban in public places and increasing prices of cigarettes combined to raise the number of consumers giving up or limiting their smoking. This resulted in falling consumption of cigarettes by 3%, which translated into a drop in total tobacco packaging of 3% in 2012. In particular, this was seen in the declining utilisation of folding cartons as primary packaging as well as flexible plastic and flexible aluminium/plastic as secondary packaging.

Industry Prospects

Tobacco packaging is predicted to decrease at a CAGR of 3% over the forecast period, dropping to 6,628 million units. Further restrictions on the tobacco industry were discussed in 2012. Among others, under consideration are the introduction of plain packages, placement of pictorial warnings on packages, bans on slim and menthol cigarettes and further increases in excise taxes. These moves are predicted to translate into a further drop in sales of tobacco products, especially cigarettes. Consequently, sharpening legal regulations and increasing retail prices will result in a rising scale of smuggling and illegal sales of cigarettes in Poland.
